For the five days prior to your procedure avoid using on your face Retinoids, such as Retin-A, Vitamin C, Glycolic acids, and any type of strong cream that could interfere with your treatment. Avoid getting skin treatments at least two weeks prior to your session; these includes microdermabrasion and any type of professional or home exfoliation, Botox, Fillers, etc. Timing treatments is the clinic’s responsibility, as long as you do all your treatments at the same location, which is highly recommended.

Also, if you are taking antibiotics, make sure you have taken your last dose at least 7 days prior to your laser treatment.

TREATMENT OVERVIEW

PRP therapy for hair loss is a treatment that involves withdrawing a patient's own blood, processing it so that the enriched platelets (platelet-rich plasma) remain, and then injecting it into the scalp. PRP contains essential growth factors that stimulate natural hair growth. Due to the natural variation in quality of platelet-rich plasma, results will vary between individuals. Patients typically require multiple sessions to obtain desired outcomes.

Contraindications

You should not have PRP for Hair Loss treatment done if you have any of the following conditions:

PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

7 Days Before Treatment

Discontinue blood thinning agents such as vitamin E, vitamin A, Ginko, Garlic, Flax, Cod Liver Oil, and Essential Fatty Acids, and multivitamins, a minimum of 7 days (preferably 14 days) prior to treatment. It is fine to continue iron and vitamin D. If you are taking any blood thinners, please let your provider know immediately, as they may represent a contraindication to this treatment. These medications include Plavix, Coumadin and Heparin. Avoid aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications. We want inflammation to occur – as this is one mechanism by which PRP works. You may use Tylenol (acetaminophen) as needed prior to the treatment. Prescription medications (including heart and blood pressure medication) should be taken as prescribed right up to, and including, the day of and the day after your treatments. If you are taking broad beta-blockers such as Inderal (Propranolol), please inform your clinician as this medication may need to be changed to a select beta-blocker in advance of the treatment. Avoid excessive sun or heat exposure.

3 Days Before Treatment

Minimize or avoid alcohol consumption. If possible, refrain from smoking prior to your procedure as it impacts the healing process. You may continue other hair loss treatments such as laser treatment, minoxidil, or hormone blocking tablets before your procedure. If you are not sure if you should be stopping a medication, please ask. It is ok to color your hair up to 7 days before the procedure. Increase your intake of fluid the day before your procedure by simply drinking 2 glasses of water in the morning, 2 glasses at lunch, and 2 glasses at dinner, in addition to your normal intake of water to make the blood draw easier.

Post treatment discomfort is typically minimal, but if the area is uncomfortable, over-the counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (regular or extra strength Tylenol) and Benadryl (for swelling and itching) may be used. Usually, it feels like a sunburn at first, and then becomes tight and dry. You should avoid ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), naproxen (Aleve), and aspirin for 24 hours after the procedure. Swelling is typically a short-term response. Use of a cold compress or ice packs will help to relieve the swelling. Swelling is typically worst when you first wake up in the morning especially around the eyes and mouth. Sleep with your head elevated on pillows above the level of your heart. If an antiviral was prescribed for you, continue to take as directed. Be sure treated areas are completely covered in Aquaphor at all times.
